Beth Bales: Where Did the GHS Class of 2011 Go? Most Picked WCC and ISU

Each September, the Geneva High School newsletter lists the future plans for the previous graduating class. It makes for interesting reading.

The first Viking Vessel—the Geneva High School newsletter—of each school year always contains the future plans of the class that just graduated the previous May.

It’s always interesting to see what those plans are, to see where the largest number of kids are, who joined the military, who went to far-off locations.

This year is no exception. As can be expected, the big winner for the Class of 2011? Waubonsee Community College, with 74 members indicating shortly before graduation that that’s where they were headed. Eight students attend College of DuPage and 11 are headed north, to Elgin Community College.

Of the public universities in Illinois, Illinois State University was the choice of more students than any other, with 24 now going to class in the Bloomington-Normal area. (Three students now call Illinois Wesleyan University, in the same area, their home away from home.)

University of Illinois-Urbana has 18 members of the Class of 2011, while one is attending at the Springfield campus and five are University of Illinois-Chicago. Four students are at Eastern Illinois University and five attend Western Illinois University. Nine students attend Northern Illinois University.

Six headed south to Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and five at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

Nine kids are at Iowa State University, one of the winners in the out-of-state-state school category. Seven are at the University of Iowa. Nearby Wisconsin state schools lured four to the flagship Madison campus, one to Milwaukee, two to Platteville and three to Whitewater. Seven students liked the University of Missouri., and seven are attending the University of Kentucky.

Certain private colleges and universities tend to attract GHS students.

Nine members of the Class of 2011 are at Marquette University in Milwaukee, nine are at Aurora University, five are at Elmhurst College and six are at Augustana College. Columbia College in Chicago drew five students, while DePaul attracted eight. Six students headed to Naperville to attend North Central College.

Some decided to leave the Midwest entirely, including University of Montana (one), University of Next Mexico (one), University of South Carolina (two, on two campuses), University of Texas (two), University of Virginia (one), University of West Georgia (one) University of Central Florida (one), University of Colorado-Boulder (one), University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (two), University of Alabama (four), University of Arizona (one), Baylor University (one), Arizona State University (four), Georgia Institute of Technology (two), Colorado State University (one), New York University (one), Sam Houston State University I(one), South Dakota State University (one), Carroll College-Montana (one), Boston College (one), Bemidji State University (one), Appalachian State University (one) and Texas A&M University (one).

Two joined the Army, two joined the Navy, one joined the Air Force and three were joining the Marines. One student is at West Point (formally known as the United States Military Academy.)

There are always technologically inclined students, and this year is no exception. Two students headed to the Environmental Technical Institute, one is at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, one is at Rose-Hulman Institute of Tech and one is at Tribecca Flashpoint Academy.

The West Coast drew two students: one to Oregon State University and another to University of California. Well, those seem to be the farthest locations in the U.S! One student was headed to work for the ... Government of Pakistan.
