Beth Bales: As New School Year Approaches, It's Time to Sort

Ever wonder what happens to those huge registration packets filled with paper you return to school? They all have to be sorted.

Harry Potter’s Hogwarts has the Sorting Hat.

Geneva High School has a Sorting Table.

On the table in the main office of GHS are bins into which all those many pieces of paper that parents fill out in registering their children are sorted. Listings for the GHS Directory? Check. Sports Boosters? Check. Proof of Residence? Check. Senior Breakfast, health forms, Music Boosters? Check, check, check. The new Theater Boosters group? Check (and a Patch item in the next week or so).

It’s Lisa Stone’s system for organizing all those pieces of paper and all those monies coming in, as the school gears up for another school year. The different colors and the sorting bins all help to smooth the process of enrolling and keeping track of approximately 2,000 students.

There are obviously some pieces of paper that everyone returns. What’s the winner in the optional sheets? Two bins of orange sheets tell the tale: It’s the PTO Directory, which lists students’ names, parents’ names, addresses and phone numbers. Any GHS parent will attest to its value, when searching for the address of their child’s new best friend.

Paper sorting continues, as school begins in four-and-a-half weeks!

(Teachers: How are you spending your summer? Enjoying time off? Taking classes? Learning new tricks of the trade? Please e-mail me for a future Patch item.)
