I am nominating Matt Loberg for the Mathematics Student of the Month because of his work ethic and positive attitude.

Matt comes to class with a smile every day. He has a great sense of humor and makes the Algebra I class lively and fun. At the same time, Matt is a serious student who always comes to class prepared and actively participates in the lessons. He asks great questions and is always striving to understand.

As the mathematics becomes more difficult second semester, some students can be discouraged. Matt just takes any setbacks in stride, learns from his mistakes and performs better on the next assignment. For these reasons, he is an excellent role model for the other students in the class. I am confident that Matt’s integrity, character and optimistic approach to challenging tasks will serve him well in all of his future endeavors.

Stephen Loomis, Grade 9

Nominated by Jen O’Leary

First period is usually the class where students are half asleep and want to go back to sleep rather than learn something new. They are usually quieter and take a bit longer to ask questions.

Stephen Loomis is the Industrial Technology Student of the month because he does not really fit that description! Stephen comes to class with a smile on his face and ready to learn the concepts of CAD 1.

He struggled at first and persisted in asking questions about the things he didn't understand. Stephen even went so far as to ask to take equipment home so he could spend more time working on his board drawings. With that extra work, he is now pulling ahead of others in class. He does need to remember to stay on the current task and not to start getting ready for future projects!

His sense of humor serves him well in class, so he always has a positive attitude—even first thing in the morning!

Mitchell Spencer, Grade 9

Nominated by Roxanne Curtis

It is my great pleasure to nominate Mitchell Spencer as my choral music student of the month!

Mitchell is an intelligent and enthusiastic singer, and he serves as an outstanding role model for his peers. He is conscientious and dedicated, and his smile is infectious!

Although Mitchell has choir the last hour of the day, he comes to class with boundless energy, ready to sing, and always gives above and beyond what is asked of him. It is refreshing to see such passion in a young man, and I know that he will continue to do great things throughout his musical tenure at Geneva High School.

Mitchell, I am most honored and extremely proud to recognize your musical accomplishments today. Congratulations!

Alec Latham, Grade 9

Nominated by Fred Fortman

Alec Latham is my choice for student of the month in science. Alec has had a wonderful start to second semester. His grades are up, but more importantly his desire, focus and attention to detail is driving him to succeed.

Alec has always been a smart kid, but his commitment to learning is allowing him to reach new heights. I know Alec will say it is not all his doing, but make no mistake, this needed to be inside of him all along. I am so proud to see his abilities flourish, and I look forward to seeing it continue.
