Where Do You Stand on the Geneva Teachers' Union Negotiations?

Patch Poll: What does the average Joe and Jane citizen of Geneva think would be a fair compromise in teacher compensation in School District 304?

No one asked us, of course.

And members of the general public don't know what bargaining chips might be on the table in ongoing talks between the Geneva School District 304 Board of Education and the Geneva Education Association, because that's the way negotiations go—behind closed doors.

Clearly, there are strong opinions on both sides—and a lot in between—regarding the talks that have extended past the Aug. 15 end of the previous three-year pact.

Speaking eloquently at , teacher Brian Burns offered a statement that sounds, in retrospect, a little bit like the speech given Wednesday by Paul Ryan at the Republican National Convention.

"We need to find a way to come to an equitable solution, one which honors the professionalism of our teachers and acknowledges the sacrifices of the citizens," Burns said. "We can do this."

So what's a fair solution?

In the 2009 contract, teachers received salary increases ranging from 2.6 percent to 3.5 percent percent for each of the three years.

Should teachers get a repeat of the previous contract agreement? Should salaries be frozen? Or is there something in between?
