Two Interesting Twists to Geneva Voters Forum at 6 P.M. Tuesday at Persinger Rec Center

A voters forum sponsored by the FACTS group and moderated by Dave Heun takes place tomorrow (Tuesday) the Stephen D. Persinger Recreation Center.

There appear to be at least two interesting twists to a candidates forum tomorrow (Tuesday) sponsored by a tax-watchdog group with the acronym FACTS—"For Accountable Controlled Tax Spending."

The forum will be moderated by longtime Geneva journalist Dave Heun and takes place  from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Stephen D. Persinger Recreation Center on Kaneville Road just west of Peck Road.

Here's the recently updated schedule:

  • 6 p.m.—Kane County Forest Preserves Open Space Referendum
  • 6:25 p.m.—Geneva Park District Board candidates
  • 6:50 p.m.—Geneva City Council candidates
  • 7:45 p.m.—Geneva Community Unit School District 304 Board candidates

The first interesting turn of events is that the Kane County Forest Preserve District has asked for time to do a PowerPoint presentation. This will be a good opportunity for voters to better understand the open-space referendum and the impact on their tax bills.

Because of the PowerPoint presentation, Forest Preserve speakers were asked to go first, said Jay Moffat, a 21-year member of the Geneva Plan Commission and one of the FACTS founders.

A second interesting turn of events is that Third Ward candidate Dean Kilburg will be out of town and unable to attend, so Moffat said Kilburg has been granted a proxy: present Third Ward Alderman . Kilburg faces off against Becky Hruby in the Third Ward race.

The FACTS group is know for its criticism of local taxing bodies. Heun's participation as moderator ensures independent oversight.

"Dave has had total independence and carte blanche to do as he sees fit," Moffat said. "I'm glad he stepped foward. He'll be there to moderate and make sure fairness exists."

Advanced questions have been prepared and submitted to Heun for review. Audience questions will be taken as time permits, Moffat said.
