Kane Property Tax Bills Going Up 2.29% on Average; 1st Installment Due June 3

If you got an ouch for your federal income tax return this year, you've got a little more than a month to get ready for the next sting: your Kane County property tax bill.

If taxpayers revolted in the April 9 municipal elections, you wouldn't have noticed. There were a number of exceptions, but for the most part, incumbents won the day in school board, mayoral, park board and library board races.

So if you didn't vote in those races, no griping is allowed on your tax bill. (OK, we'll allow some griping, since it's the usual result of those bills that arrive in the mail on or before May 1.)

Kane County Treasurer David J. Rickert has sent out the annual press release announcing the "when" and some of the "what" of your upcoming bill.

The first installment will be due June 3, and the second installment Sept. 3, 2013.

The Bad News

According to Rickert's press release, the average tax bill will go up about 2.29 percent from last year—after going up 1.69 percent, 2.08 percent and 3.64 percent in the previous three years, respectively.

That translates to an average bill of $5,881 in 2010, $6,004 in 2011, $6,106 in 2012 and $6,245 in 2013.

News You Can Use

Taxpayers can make payment by:

  • Mailing the payment with coupon to the Treasurer’s Office, in the envelope provided.
  • Making the payment with coupon at any one of the designated banks within Kane County.
  • Making the payment with coupon during business hours—8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, in the Treasurer's Office.
  • Dropping the payment with coupon in the property-tax drop box, which is available 24 hours a day. The drop box is located behind Building A at the Government Center in Geneva.
  • Paying by eredit card or E-check over the Internet. Please note there are convenience fees for both of these services. Additional information is
