Geneva School Board Meetings Moved to Williamsburg Elementary

In the wake of a decision to demolish the Coultrap facility, Geneva School District 304 announces a change of venue.

If you vote to demolish a building because it's out of date and unsafe, it's probably not a good idea to hold School Board meetings there.

The Geneva School District 304 Board of Education voted 7-0 Monday, Jan. 28, to demolish the Coultrap facility, where regular board meetings and Finance Committee meetings routinely were held in a room that at one time was the school's cafeteria.

District 304 announced Jan. 30 that the new venue would be Williamsburg Elementary School, 1812 Williamsburg Ave.

Board meetings generally are held at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays each month. The next board meeting, and the first at Wiliamsburg Elementary, is scheduled for Feb. 11.

You can see meeting schedules and agendas by visiting the BoardBook on the District 304 website.

A meeting calendar for the remainder of the 2012-2013 school year can be found by clicking on “Meetings” in the Board of Education menu.

At the Jan. 14 School Board meeting, Director of Facility Operations Scott Ney made a PowerPoint presentation showing slide after slide of disrepair at the Coultrap facility, including exposed wires, rusting pipes, leaky roofing, a valve that caught on fire in one of the former classrooms, split vent pipes, decayed tuck pointing, mortar dropping away from the brick, rust on steel windows, failing plaster, blistering paint and asbestos tiles.

Meetings there sometimes were uncomfortable because of the distance between the board members and the audience. When the board adjourned to executive session, members of the public were asked to wait outside until the board reconvened.

The District 304 news release does not say what room in Williamsburg will be used to host the meetings.
