School Board Calls Special Meeting to Discuss Elementary School Boundaries

Geneva School District 304 is moving forward with plans to redraw boundaries for Geneva's elementary schools. Public discussion begins with a special meeting Saturday at the Coultrap facility.

In previous meetings, Geneva School Board members agreed that it's time to take another look at , following "bubbles" of kindergarten and/or first-grade enrollment at , and .

Back in June, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Craig Collins said enrollment projections showed class sizes at Mill Creek at 27 and 28 students. The School Board held a to discuss the enrollment issue.

After hearing from several parents concerned about busing their kindergartners from  and  to other area schools with lower enrollment estimates, the board voted unanimously to hire two teachers, one each for Mill Creek and Williamsburg. Two additional teacher assistants also were hired.

The cost to the district is $64,300 for the new teachers. 

At the special meeting Saturday, the agenda item is to discuss the elementary boundary adjustment planning process. Typically, a boundary adjustment takes several months to complete and requires several public hearings as well as discussion at regularly scheduled board meetings.

School Board President Mark Grosso emphasized Wednesday that Saturday's morning meeting will be "more like a retreat," will primarily focus on the planning process and not involve a lot of specifics about boundaries. He anticipated that the meeting would last about an hour and that the process overall would involve many future opportunities for public examination and comment.

New boundaries won't be adopted, he said, until probably spring 2013.

The boundary changes come at a time when the School Board is dealing with a number of important issues, including ongoing , the possible and that has contributed to growing property tax bills.
