Route 25 to Reopen Friday, Aug. 31

The Illinois Department of Transportation closed the roadway July 23 to replace a culvert. The planned closure originally was to end Aug. 10.

If you were expecting Route 25 to reopen Aug. 27, you may have to wait several more days.

The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced that Route 25 just south of Fox Glen Drive will reopen to normal traffic in time for the Labor Day weekend, according to a release from the .

James Bernahl, Engineering Division manager for the city of St. Charles, said Friday afternoon that IDOT notified the city this week that the contractors on the project believe they can reopen Route 25 on the morning of Friday, Aug. 31.

IDOT closed the road July 23 to repair a failing culvert at Norton Creek. , but IDOT announced .

The city issued it’s release Friday, stating the closure would be lifted before the Labor Day weekend, which begins Saturday, Sept. 1.

The project is peripherally linked to the controversial Red Gate bridge project on the north end of St. Charles. The $30 million project will connect Red Gate Road on the west side of the Fox River to Route 25, south of Pinelands Road. A two-lane car deck and pedestrian walkway connecting a bike trail from St. Charles North High School across the river to the Fox River Trail near Pinelands Road are some of the features of the new bridge. The includes widening and reconstructing Illinois 25 and Illinois 31, along with drainage, lighting and traffic signal improvements.

Ted, You are incorrect that this project is "tied to the controversial Red Gate bridge project..." The connection is coincidental in that IDOT identified an urgent need to perform the work at the same time the bridge construction was taking place. So, IDOT amended the construction contract for Red Gate Bridge to add the work.

Dang! This is the first time I have ever enjoyed a road closure! No one crawling up my bumper all the way to town, it's been a pleasure which I'll miss.
