Road Crews Advance on Route 64

Work on the East Main Street/Route 64 road reconstruction project is advancing and on schedule.

Work on the East Main Street/Route 64 road reconstruction project is advancing and on schedule, with indications of the preparation work needed in advance of installing new roadway sections.

The is the final season for the three-year, $49 million road reconstruction project that’s being shepherded through by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

St. Charles Public Works Engineering Division Manage Jim Bernahl, in a release issued late last week said the project remains on schedule. Perhaps the most noticeable change has been the traffic pattern changes near Smith and Kautz roads, with vehicle traffic being shifted onto the new pavement there.

Here’s a ample of what to expect in the coming days, according to Bernahl’s weekly email update to residents and businesses affected by the project. Here’s the rest of his insights into what to expect:

38th Avenue to Route 59

  • The contractor is expected to begin preparing the roadway sub-base and begin placement of the bituminous asphalt base for the new concrete roadway over the next few weeks. This work will primarily be focused on the far eastern limits of the project.
  • The contractor is expecting to continue the placement of the aggregate sub-base on the north side of East Main Street between the entrance of Pheasant Run and Powis. This work is expected to be ongoing for the next two weeks. The Contractor is expecting to continue to regrade the parkway within this same section and expecting to be completed by Tuesday May 29, 2013; weather permitting.
  • Beginning Tuesday, May 21, 2013 through the remainder of this week the contractor will be switching southbound and northbound traffic on Smith Road and Kautz Road to comply with the proposed Stage 2 traffic patterns. Once the traffic patterns have been modified the contractor will begin the removal of the roadway on the east side of Smith Road and Kautz Road.
  • The contractor is expecting to complete the final grading near the intersection of Smith Road and Kautz Road by the end of this week, weather permitting. Once completed the landscaping firm will place topsoil, sod or seed, as outlined in the contract documents.
  • The contractor is expecting to complete the regarding of the landscape medians between 38th Avenue and Kautz Road by the end of this week; weather permitting.
  • The contractor is expecting to have the driveway entrance into Pheasant Run completed by Friday May 31, 2013.
  • The contractor is expected to continue with the storm sewer work between Keil Street and Powis Road. This work is expected to be ongoing for the next two to three weeks, weather permitting.
  • Construction activities associated with the new bridge near Powis Road are expected to continue through the next few months. Work at the bridge is expected to be completed by mid-July 2013. Currently work activities are focused on the center lanes of the bridge with traffic being diverted to the new outside lanes.

7th Avenue to Kirk Road

  • The contractor will continue with the removal of the existing roadway on the north side of East Main Street continuing east of Cedar Avenue. The Contractor has begun the preparation of the sub-grade for the new roadway section between 7th Avenue and 13th Avenue. The contractor is expecting begin the placement of the bituminous layer in this section in the next few weeks; weather permitting.
  • The contractor will continue with curb installation work on East Main Street between Tyler Road and Kirk Road. The contractor was able to frame and prepare for the installation of the new curbing on the east side of Dunham Road. Included with this concrete work will be permanent concrete patching for the proposed roadway widening.
  • The contractor will continue with storm sewer improvements on the north side of East Main Street from 13th Avenue to Tyler Road. This work is expected to progress easterly towards Dunham Road throughout the next few months.
  • The contractor will begin forming and placing retaining wall No. 2 and No. 3. Retaining wall number two is located near the intersection of on East Main Street and Cedar Avenue. Retaining wall number three is located on the north side of East Main Street approximately five-hundred feet east of Hunt Club Drive. This work is expected to be on going for the next three to four weeks.
  • The contractor will continue with pavement grinding and removal work focusing primarily on the north side of East Main Street from 7th Avenue towards Kirk Road. This work is anticipated to be ongoing for the next few weeks.
