Pasta Helps Fund Posies—Don't Miss This Springtime Spaghetti Spectacular

In meteorological terms, spring starts today! Warmer weather is on the way, as are the flowers that beautify our downtown. A spaghetti supper Wednesday helps fund those blooms.

Ah, it’s March. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, today is the first day of spring! We’ve broken the back of winter.

Forget the vernal equinox. I follow the “meteorological seasons” that weather guru Tom Skilling talks about frequently, with each season comprising three whole months. It’s not just him, either. According to Wikpedia, the idea of grouping seasons by three months each has been around since 1780. For those who like their sources a little more respected, the American Meteorological Society agrees.

March 1 is the perfect day to remember that, yes, warmer weather beckons. Soon we’ll be enjoying mild weather in Geneva, and enjoying the beautiful flowers that decorate our downtown intersections and other areas.

On Wednesday, March 2, people can help fund that beautification effort, with the Geneva Beautification Committee Spaghetti Supper, known as “Pasta for Posies.”

The dinner is from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Riverview Banquets, 1117 N. Washington Ave., (Route 25) in Batavia (also known as the Knights of Columbus meeting hall). Ticks are $10 for adults or $5 for children 10 and under, if purchased before the dinner. At the door, tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for a kid's dinner.

The dinner features all-you-can-eat spaghetti with meat sauce, tossed salad, Italian bread, butter, olive oil and vinegar and an assortment of desserts, many of them homemade by committee volunteers. Coffee, tea, water and milk will be provided and a cash bar is available. Take-out is also available. A 50/50 raffle is part of the evening, and winners need not be present to take home some cash. Those who fill out the contact info on the ticket stub get their tickets entered into a drawing to win a wine basket or a $25 gift certificate to Fiora’s in downtown Geneva.

Local gardening expert Mary Stavenhagen will present a seminar on environmentally friendly ways to recycle in your garden and how to spend money wisely when it comes to conservation and the yard. “It IS Easy Being Green” starts at 6:30 p.m.

Remember, it’s spring! (So, really, it’s psychological spring,” opined a skeptic to whom I mentioned the whole meteorological seasons scenario on Monday morning.)

Psychological or not, spring is on the way. “Pasta for Posies” can not only feed the family, but also help make it a beautiful warm-weather season here in Geneva.
