On the Web: Fermilab's Supercollider Still Yielding Information for Scientists

Fermilab data still drives particle physics. Here's a roundup of Fermi-related stories onlne.

Fermilab's Tevatron particle accelerator after helping scientists study the building blocks of matter—subatomic particles—for the last 30 years.

An article in Voice Of America reports that scientists are still analyzing the massive amounts of data Tevatron produced before it was shut down.

Dr. Robert Roser has spent more than 20 years looking for the elusive . He estimates a final analysis of whether or not it even exists should be ready by next spring.

You can read more on Dr. Roser's work in this article in The Elburn Herald.

There's also a very nice tribute to Fermilab on the Economist website, which is an older story, but it talks about and some other concepts that should keep Fermilab moving forward.

That article also posts reasons for concern.

"A more immediate worry is an exodus of talent not employed directly by the laboratory. The number of scientists and students from the United States and abroad who are employed by other academic institutions but do their research at Fermilab is expected to drop by several hundred over the next few years, from around 2,000 today."

You can read some good news about Fermilab on FLC Newslink, which is the newsletter of the Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology Transfer.

The website has a story that talks about President Obama's recently released memorandum "calling for the acceleration of federal technology transfer and commercialization in support of high-growth businesses."

"Federal research and development (R&D) are at the forefront of the President’s Startup America initiative, which is designed to support high-growth entrepreneurship and foster innovation by increasing the rate of technology transfer and the economic and societal impacts from federal R&D investments," the story said.
