2 Geneva Neighborhoods Likely to Change Grade Schools

Students from two parts of town—downtown Geneva south of State Street and an East Side area south of Fabyan Parkway—might attend Western Avenue School rather than Williamsburg next year. Fabyan Elementary and Mill Creek boundaries will be untouched.

Students from two parts of town likely will attend Western Avenue School next year rather than Williamsburg Elementary, according to a memo published in the Fabyan Facts newsletter by Geneva School District 304 Superintendent Dr. Kent Mutchler.

Fabyan Elementary School and Mill Creek Elementary School won't have to change their boundaries, a School District task force has concluded.

The decisions aren't final, but the task force recommendations are expected to be presented at the Board of Education meeting on April 8.

"We will not be recommending any adjustments in attendance boundaries between Mill Creek Elementary School and Fabyan Elementary School at this time," Mutchler said in the memo. "(But) we are continuing to explore possible attendance boundary adjustments between Williamsburg Elementary School and Western Avenue School."

In particular, the task force is studying movement of students who live in Neighborhood 20 and all or parts of Neighborhood 25 from Williamsburg to Western Avenue for the 2013-14 school year.

Neighborhood 25 is traditionally thought of as downtown Geneva. It is the area south of State Street and Kaneville Road and north of the Union Pacific Railroad tracks from the Fox River on the east to Syril Drive and Western Avenue on the west.

Neighborhood 20 is on the East Side, south of Fabyan Parkway from the river to what looks like North Raddant Road on the School District map.

"We gathered a great deal of input at the four public forums held in February and are continuing to explore the comments and questions offered at those forums. We are also waiting for numbers from Kindergarten registration, which is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, March 12," Mutchler said in the memo.

Kindergarten registration was rescheduled from Tuesday, March 5, due to a snow day that cancelled school and made travel difficult.

Mutchler said the district will be sending a copy of his memo to parents at the four elementary schools.

"We will also work to list the common themes in questions and comments received at the forums as an update within the next few days," Mutchler said.

Fabyan and Mill Creek students won't have to move next year, but the district will keep an eye on enrollment balance.

"Since the main objective of making adjustments is to balance enrollments and educational programs between buildings, we see no need to make any adjustments between (Mill Creek and Fabyan Elementary) currently," Mutchler said. "We will continue to monitor future growth and enrollment changes at these schools for possible adjustments in future years."
