Library Board Approves Future Sale of Property to City

With a 5-1 vote, the Library Board approves the sale of property to the city of Geneva.

Three days after the City Council , the Library Board approved a mirroring resolution Thursday evening.

The Board voted—with “good faith” intent—to sell the , 127 James St., to the city of Geneva.

The board’s non-binding resolution stated that the sale would occur sometime in the next several years.

Further details in the resolution, including the determination of purchase price based on the average of three appraisals, are nearly identical to those approved in and then the full City Council on Monday.

Library Board Trustee Susan Shivers cast the lone dissenting vote, expressing agreement with the intent of the resolution, but discomfort with the wording of certain claims in the document.

“The city expressed a need for more space, but I don’t know if they have a need,” Shivers said.

Board President Esther Barclay disagreed. “There is without question a need for more space,” she said.

Barclay said the sale also would help preserve the historic character of the building, which dates back to 1908.

Although it is likely the transaction between the library and the city will occur, the process could be interrupted if the library is unable to successfully purchase the Cetron property, or pass a referendum for building bonds.
