Politics & Government

Kilburg Is Geneva's Next Third Ward Alderman

With all four Third Ward precincts in, Dean Kilburg wins seat over Becky Hruby.

Former School Board President Dean Kilburg has a new role in government—this time as alderman of Geneva's Third Ward.

Kilburg handily—and quickly—defeated Beck Hruby, whose interest in city politics was sparked by her successful efforts to lobby the city for paving of some Geneva East alleyways that had fallen into disrepair.

Kilburg nearly doubled Hruby's vote count—249 to 131—taking 63.04 percent of the vote.

Voter turnout was low but a little better than the consolidated election two years ago, when 11.1 percent of registered voters took part in the Third Ward election process. More than 16 percent of Third Ward voters turned out in 2011.

Killburg will follow his friend, Ray Pawlak, who decided not to seek another term in order to spend more time with his family.

What were some of the factors in Tuesday's win?

"I think the reality is that there’s some name recongniticon—I’ve been around for quite awhile," Kilburg said. "Overall, I think Becky ran a good race and a positive campaign. I truly respect her passion and her willingness to get involved, and I hope she continues to stay active. We need young people who are invested in the process and willing to make Genava a better place to live.

"This is a great community. Linda and I are privileged and proud to live here. If I can help in some way to meet some of the challenges we face, that’s my big reward."

Among the big issues facing Geneva are dwindling revenues from water consumption and threats from the state of Illinois to cut off city's portions of the motor fuel tax.

"(The big issue is) the financial piece and where do we go from here," Kilburg said. "There’s a lot of uncertainly about funding. There's never an easy decision, and some of the things we hear from the state are disconcerting.

"The reality is that some of this might not be pleassent. I hope that’s the not case. But we can’t bury our heads in the sand. As a City Council, we really need to support each other and make good decisions for the citizens of Geneva."
