Island Park's North Bridge Work Is Complete

Geneva Park District re-opens Island Park and Fox River Trail.

The construction work that began this spring on Island Park's north bridge is now complete, and the park and the Fox River Trail are re-opened to the public, the Geneva Park District announced earlier this week.

“The Geneva Park District Board and staff are extremely pleased to have the Fox River Trail re-opened in time for trail users this fall,” said Sheavoun Lambillotte, Geneva Park District executive director.

In addition to the bridge work, park improvements include a new tree-house-themed playground with a zip line, trail resurfacing, structural improvements to the pavilion and stage, major ash tree removal and tree replacements.

The new bridge replaces one that was built in 1931.

The bridge work kept the park closed and the bike path detoured since work began in June, but the park was opened for the Labor Day weekend for the annual Fox Valley Folk Music and Storytelling Festival, when attendees got to the park via a gravel walking path along the side of the bridge.

During construction, crews and heavy equipment accessed the construction site via a temporary bridge crossing the river from the former Mill Race Inn parking lot.

The bridge work was made possible through a stimulus grant secured in 2010 in the amount of $729,110.
