In Their Own Words: Meet School Board Candidate Robert L. Cabeen

Here is a brief autobiography of Robert "Larry" Cabeen, one of six candidates vying for three seats on the Geneva School Board.

So, Robert L. Cabeen is running for the Geneva District 304 School Board. Who is he? Well, some people think he is very qualified for the job.

Of course, he has the usual background for an office. He has lived in the Fox Valley for 30 years and Geneva for five years. He has a wife and two grown kids. Robert served in the Air Force for six years and flew as captain for United Air Lines, mostly on overseas flights, for 37 years. Good background, but what about the school board?

Well, first, he has a degree from the University of Illinois with a major in education. He has taught some in public schools and even worked in a teaching capacity for the Federal Aviation Administration.

Even more important than that is his past service on several boards. He was president of the Baker Church Board of Trustees and the Elgin Choral Union Board, among others. He knows how things work on boards and how to get things done.

OK. What's his agenda? He values our fine Geneva school system, and he is willing to do whatever is required to keep our schools strong. However, he also says he won't raise taxes.

His background in education allows him to see what is important and what is extra. If that's not enough, he's retired and has the time to do a great and careful job. I'd vote for him.

Editor's note: Geneva Patch invited candidates in local contested races—for Park Board, School Board and City Council seats—to tell us a little bit about themselves in 300 words or less. Candidates also are invited to submit a final essay prior to the election.
