In Their Own Words: Meet First Ward Aldermanic Candidate Charles N. Brown

Here's a brief autobiography of 1st Ward aldermanic candidate Chuck Brown, who is running against Esther Barclay and Zac Ploppert.

Mary Kay and I have lived in the First Ward of Geneva for 37 years. We have raised two children, Chris and Susan, here and feel blessed that we chose Geneva for our home.

I am a staff scientist at Fermilab. My wife, Mary Kay, worked at the Geneva Chamber of Commerce and taught at Rosary High School.

In 1987, I was elected to Jim Riley’s seat on the City Council. In 1992, Fermilab asked me to serve at the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C., for two years. In 1996, Mayor William Ottilie reappointed me to the council; I have served the residents of the First Ward since.

It was a tough decision whether to run for one more term. I was encouraged by many friends in the First Ward. Considering the challenges Geneva is facing, I believe I can contribute and decided to run for one more term.

I have always accepted the challenge of responding to comments and suggestions of my constituents in a creative and timely manner. I have successfully fought to reduce the city’s portion of your property tax rate from more than a dollar to about 55 cents. My goal: a tax rate below 50 cents!

A First Ward alderman has responsibility for both the residents of the First Ward and the downtown business district. Sales tax is the biggest single source of revenue in the city budget. Nurturing the health of the First Ward must include preserving the Downtown Business District as well as our wonderful First Ward.

I bring significant experience, a historic perspective and a unique set of skills to the City Council. I would be honored to serve the First Ward again and pledge to continue to make our ward, and city, a wonderful place to live.

Editor's note: Geneva Patch invited candidates in local contested races—for Park Board, School Board and City Council seats—to tell us a little bit about themselves in 300 words or less. Candidates also are invited to submit a final essay prior to the election.
