In Their Own Words: Meet First Ward Aldermanic Candidate Esther Barclay

Here's a brief autobiography of First Ward aldermanic candidate Esther Barclay, who is running against Zac Ploppert and Chuck Brown.

My family moved to Geneva in 1972. My parents and my brother and sister all still live in Geneva.  I am a graduate of Geneva High School and attended Waubonsee Community College and Northern Illinois University. All three of my children—Christopher, Geoffrey and Kaitlin—have grown up here in Geneva. I have been active in different community organizations for as long as I can remember, starting with teaching Sunday School at the Geneva Methodist Church when I was in High School.

As the children grew, I became active in organizations they participated in. I was on the Board of Directors for Tri-City Youth Football and was active in other groups,  from Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to Music Boosters. It was wonderful, and I found time to get involved in other ways, such as SPAC where I helped with the Skate Park, Cultural Arts Commission and the formation of the Natural Resources Committee.

I then ran for the Library Board, where I have held office for eight years and served as the president for the last five. While on the Library Board, we have experienced unprecedented growth and have managed to maintain a strong, stable budget, worked tirelessly to keep the current facility functional in the face of the growth and are close to securing a site for a new library for the future.

In addition, I have volunteered for the Geneva Park District and served on its Master Plan Committee, the Geneva Bikeway Implementation Committee, the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, Friends of the Library and the Geneva Beautification Committee.

Over the years, I have had the honor of participating in the growth and change of Geneva. I am so proud of this community, and I look forward to many years of service in the future.

Editor's note: Geneva Patch invited candidates in local contested races—for Park Board, School Board and City Council seats—to tell us a little bit about themselves in 300 words or less. Candidates also are invited to submit a final essay prior to the election.
