In Their Own Words: Here's Why You Should Vote for 3rd Ward Aldermanic Candidate Dean J. Kilburg

Dean Kilburg is running against Becky Hruby for an open seat as 3rd Ward Alderman.

Serving on the City Council is important because you have a responsibility to all Geneva residents. The office requires a dedication to service, a commitment to good communication and a lot of hard work.

Having lived in Geneva’s 3rd Ward for almost 25 years, I have served in elected office in Geneva and on a number advisory boards that demonstrated my interest in and my commitment to community matters.

Community involvement has helped me gain a deep understanding of the complex issues impacting Geneva and its various needs looking forward. The city faces several difficult decisions relating to the current economy. Even with these challenges, our community has a positive future that we must work and plan for.

There is no single issue that motivates my decision to run. However, there are several key issues impacting the community that will require strong and thoughtful leadership by the city council in a challenging economic climate.

My primary goal would include approving realistic city budgets that are managed and balanced to minimize the tax impact on our residents. One of these key budget issues will center on future public employee contracts and the funding of their respective pension funds.

I would also prioritize the funding of essential areas relating to our primary services and infrastructure. This list would include services such as water, sewage, stormwater, electricity, streets, sidewalks and garbage.

In difficult times, we need to focus on the basics. Finally, I would support a more proactive private-public sector approach to local economic development looking to expand job creation while working with current employers on job preservation.

Public service has been a rewarding life-long experience. I have the desire, passion and the necessary optimism to effectively represent the Third Ward as we work together to navigate demanding times.

I ask for your support and vote on April 5.
