Hultgren: Why I Voted for Keep Your Health Plan Act

"It appears the president has finally conceded he broke his promise that Americans could keep their health care, but we reject his 'fix-of-the-day' approach."

U.S. Representative Randy Hultgren (IL-14th District) voted with the House on Friday to pass the Keep Your Health Plan Act of 2013, H.R. 3350, to ensure Americans who like their current health plans would be able to keep them, and ensure they would not face a penalty for doing so.

“It appears the president has finally conceded he broke his promise that Americans could keep their health care, but we reject his ‘fix-of-the-day’ approach. Only legislative solutions—not limited, politically-motivated fixes—can reverse the damage of his broken promises,” Hultgren said. “Millions of Americans, many of them in my own district, have received cancellation notices in the mail from their health providers as a result of Obamacare’s regulations, and many others fear they are next.

“Now the president has threatened to veto this legislative solution which will help all Americans keep their healthcare if they want it. The Constitution charges Congress with passing laws for the general welfare of the country. The administration has already made more than 250 other fixes, without going through Congress, because of how quickly and sloppily the law was rushed through. We cannot keep relying on administrative band-aids. I’m pleased the House voted to pass the Keep Your Health Plan Act to make sure the president’s promises are kept in law.

“As more of this law is rolled out, Americans like less and less of it. The HealthCare.Gov debacle is well-documented, premiums and deductibles are rising and the vast Medicaid expansion will put states like Illinois on the hook for millions in unfunded liabilities—something we can’t afford. Fixing one broken promise is not enough—this will take a comprehensive solution.”
