How to Obtain a Civil Union at the Kane County Clerk's Office in Geneva

The state said OK to civil unions and today is the first chance to do so. Here's how.

If you're at the   today (Wednesday), you can also get a civil union while you're there.

The website of the Kane County Clerk's Office has excellent information about how to go about applying for a civil union license as well as obtaining a civil union certificate after the ceremony.

The process of getting a certificate takes about a half hour and costs $27, cash only. Once you get the certificate, it becomes effective within 24 hours and you have 60 days from that point to hold a ceremony, which can be performed by clergy or a judge. Judges are available during the hours of 3 to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Friday.

You have to be at least 18 years old, show up with your partner and have a valid, government-issued photo ID.

Once the ceremony is completed, 

Certified copies of Civil Union certificates of persons who were certified in Kane County may be obtained from the office of the Kane County Clerk

A Civil Union certificate is filed with the Clerk's office after the Civil Union ceremony takes place. The individual(s) performing the ceremony completes and signs your Civil Union license and returns it to the Clerk's office, where it is recorded.

After that occurs, the clerk's office can issue you a certified copy of your certificate upon request. It costs $11 for the first copy and $4 for each additional copy of the same record.
