Historic Preservation Awards Now Open for Nominations!

In the wake of the recent fervor over possible demolition of the Pure Oil building, here's a chance to encourage folks who are preserving Geneva's historic buildings.

There has been a lot of discussion of late about the proposed demolition of the .

Now Genevans have a chance to encourage and support those who are actively taking part in efforts to preserve Geneva's architectural history.

At 7 p.m. Monday, May 14, Mayor Kevin Burns will present the 2012 Historic Preservation awards during the City Council's Committee of the Whole meeting at City Hall. The awards presentation is a part of this year’s celebration of National Historic Preservation Month in the City of Geneva.

A jury of preservation professionals from outside the city of Geneva will evaluate the historic preservation projects completed on historic properties in 2010 and 2011.

Nominations will be taken for this year’s awards program. Nominations can be made by a property owner, architect or developer and must have been performed on a historic residential or commercial structure that is at least 50 years old.

"The Preservation Awards Program recognizes and celebrates meaningful achievements in historic preservation, and expands our awareness, appreciation and support for preservation efforts in Geneva," said Karla Kaulfuss, Geneva's historic preservation planner, in a press released dated April 6.

Nominations are due by 5 p.m. Friday, April 20, and may be submitted in person at City Hall, via email topreservation@geneva.il.us or via fax at 630/232.1494.
