Politics & Government

Here's What's Up at City Council Monday Night

Since I can't be there, I'll give you the agenda.

You never can tell what's going to pop up at a Geneva City Council meeting.

Aldermen can protest a purchase, the mayor could make an important announcement or issue a proclamation that's story-worthy. Once in awhile, someone from the audience brings up . Every now and then, there is active disagreement.

But I won't be there to record it, because I'll be at the promotion ceremony! And as much as I love the City Council, I love my daughter more, so GMS North trumps City Hall on this particular Monday.

That doesn't mean there isn't good stuff on the city's agenda, and you should defintely tune in to Channel 10 or go to the meeting if you can. Government is best as a participation sport.

I was actually quite interested to hear the presentation of the city's annual report. You can download a PDF of it here. In general, you can find the City Council and Committee of the Whole weekly agenda—which is chock full o' information—by going to the city's website, then click on City Government, then click on "City Council meeting agenda" on the lefthand side, then click on the PDF at the top, which looks like this: http://www.geneva.il.us/agendas/cc.pdf

Simple, isn't it?

Actually, the top item on the annual report is communications. The plan includes making improvements to the city's website and exploring the use of social media. The weekly GenevaMail (a weekly email bulletin) is a very good source of information.

Another itemof note on Monday's agenda is a vote to amend the Strategic Plan so that it no longer considers a . This was pretty much decided a couple weeks ago, when bunches of residents came to City Hall to say they didn't want that designation.

The balance of the business is on the consent agenda. Those items indicate topics that have been previously review or discussed and are dealt with in one, unanimous motion. Items can be removed individually from the agenda, so there is opportunity to address them, if an alderman or member of the audience requests it.

You can read the items below. Several involve purchase of items—, wastewater camera, a two-stage pump for Well No. 10—which had some previous discussion and a little debate.

And of course, I'm really curious about that item in closed session: THE PURCHASE OF REAL PROPERTY FOR THE USE OF THE PUBLIC BODY.

But we won't hold our collective breath on that one.

The agenda is below:
