GHS Neighbor: 'Why Expand Street Parking When Lots Aren't Full?'

The city sets new rules for parking on Maple, Wilow and Center, but a neighbor notes that parking at the football field and Center Street are not full. Are the parking rates too high for kids?

A homeowner living near Geneva High School is raising the issue of student parking following new parking restrictions on Maple, Willow and Center streets.

Cheryl Davis, who lives in the 600 block of Willow Lane, said homeowners received a letter from the Geneva Police Department saying that those streets will have the same restrictions and resident-parking requirements as the streets closer to the school.

"I see that the football field lot and the lot on Center Street are not full, not even close to full," she said. "The inconvenience that this restriction will cause residents is not the correction to the problem. Fix the open parking lot situation and use the resources that are available."

One of the issues, Davis says, is that the cost of parking in the assigned lots is too high for some students. First Ward Alderman Sam Hill responded to Davis' concerns in an e-mail.

"We have asked the School District to reduce the cost of parking ($50 per semester) @ the football field parking lot. They are unwilling to make that price reduction," he said.

Hill suggested the Davis family contact the School Board, because the city has no control over the parking costs.

"Let the students afford to park in the lots that the taxpayers are supporting. Do not inconvenience the residents and add more costs," Davis said in an e-mail to aldermen.

"My suggestion is that the Police monitor the speeding by the students driving on the streets before and after school," she added. "That would be a better use of their time."
