Geneva Library Director to Resign, Then Become Assistant Director

In a series of musical chairs, longtime Assistant Library Director Peggy Carlson is retiring, Matt Teske would move into her position and the library will search for a new director.

In an unusual case of staffing musical chairs, Geneva Library Director Matt Teske will resign, an interim director will take over until a new director can be found and Teske will become an assistant director, the Kane County Chronicle reported Monday.

Teske is expected to fill the spot of Assistant Director Peggy Carlson, who will retire on June 27, although there likely will be overlap.

The Library Board is expected to take formal action at a special meeting set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, at 127 James St.

Last week, the board voted to hire retired Elmhurst Library Director Marilyn Boria as interim library director. Boria was to work 12 to 15 hours a week at $60 an hour.

Teske's resignation will prompt a search for a new library director, Library Board President Esther Steel told the Chronicle.

Teske's annual salary is $110,233. Neither library officials nor the Chronicle story said why Teske was resigning or whether he was asked to resign. Teske recently took a seven-week leave of absence that was approved by the board.

Welcome to crazy town.

It is my understanding that hiring is discussed in closed session and then voted on during the public session. When were all of these changes discussed? If they were not discussed at last next's special meeting, then Wednesday will be the first time the board, as a whole, will discuss them. How can anyone say that it is expected that the current director will be named as a second assistant director if it hasn't been voted on or quite possibly even discussed in closed session? Are there any other candidates to be considered for the second assistant position, why is that position even needed before June? Is the director's resignation contingent on him being named the assistant director? If so, who approved this deal and when. Has a decision already been made without any discussion? Are the taxpayers expected to pay an assistant the same salary as a director? It appears the Library Board has a lot of explaining to do and "it is a personnel matter and can't be discussed" is not an adequate answer. We elected individuals that we felt would represent the best interest of the entire community. It is now time for each board member to do their job and if that includes airing some dirty laundry, so be it. Nothing will ever change if the truth is not addressed.

Can this be any less transparent? The more I read about Geneva government, the more it sounds like amateur night.

this makes no sense, rarely would you allow someone to resign and then take a lessor position, would a new director want the old director there? I see a crazy severance coming,
