Gay-Marriage Vote Tabled in Illinois
The Illinois House of Representatives passed on a vote that would have granted marriage rights to same-sex couples in the state, missing the deadline to pass the bill in this legislative session.
Which means the vote probably won't be coming back until November, the Daily Herald says.
Illinois would have been the 13th state to allow same-sex marriage.
The same-sex marriage issue is the topic that ultimately cost former Illinois GOP Chairman Pat Brady his job—so it's a hot-button state and national issue that has had a great deal of impact locally, for politicos as well as for the many local residents interested in the issue.
Human Rights Campaign president Chad Griffin released a statement immediately following the end of the session Friday.
“The House of Representatives has neglected the rights of its constituents by failing to vote on marriage equality legislation. For months, LGBT couples and their children have had their lives put on hold throughout an exhaustive political process that ultimately came up short.
“Today’s inaction is a prime example of why the U.S. Supreme Court must rule in favor of full marriage equality nationwide to ensure the security and welfare of these and countless other American families aren’t left to chance in future political battles.“
