Geneva City Hall Centennial Celebration, Time Capsule Opening

Geneva City Hall has stood at the northwest corner of First and James streets since 1912.

Over the years, the Mayor's Office was once a storage area for a Geneva fire truck and plays and concerts were performed in what is now Council Chambers. To mark the building's first 100 years, the public is invited to participate in the Geneva City Hall Centennial Celebration on Saturday, May 19, 9 a.m. to Noon.

The day’s activities at 22 S. First St., will not only celebrate the building’s history, but also be history making with a rededication ceremony and the unveiling of the building’s original cornerstone time capsule.

“Genevan’s take great pride in the city’s heritage, and what better way to celebrate it than to gather as community to appreciate the work of our forefathers and have some fun," Mayor Kevin Burns said.

In addition to seeing what interesting and meaningful items our forefathers decided to place in the time capsule so many years ago, those attending the celebration will also witness the items going into the new time capsule. You can also become a part of history by joining in a community photo that will be taken during the celebration.

Tours of City Hall will discuss how the use of the building has evolved over the years and attendees will hear some great stories from Geneva’s past.

Geneva High School student Kevin Brouillette has designed a special logo for the Centennial, which will be showcased on a City of Geneva Centennial Commemorative Coin, a limited number of which will be available.

The event begins at 9 a.m. with a performance from the Geneva High School Marching Band. Light refreshments will be served with pastries courtesy of Hahn’s Bakery.

To further commemorate this special year, the City is now selling its 2012 ornament featuring the east facing City Hall entrance. This limited edition pewter ornament is $12 and available either at City Hall or online at http://www.geneva.il.us/City%20Stuff%20Store/Stuff%20Store%20Page.htm.
