Politics & Government

Enough with the Commercials, Rahm!

Anyone else find a silver lining in the possibility the Chicago mayoral race will be decided Tuesday?

As a resident of Geneva, I’m a lot more interested in Geneva city government, the operations of Geneva schools and parks and other associated governmental agencies than I am about who wins tomorrow’s Chicago mayoral primary.

But as a news and politics junkie, it’s been interesting to watch the twists and turns of the fight to replace Mayor Richard Daley, aka “king” of Chicago. The jockeying began immediately, and continued for weeks. Rahm Emanuel, former chief of staff for Barack Obama, was on the ballot, then it looked like he might be off, then he was on again. He’s emerged as a prohibitive favorite, with a commanding lead in the polls.

As a firm believer in the more informed voters, the better, I hope Emanuel does NOT emerge Tuesday the clear winner. I hope there’s a runoff between the top two, with a chance for Chicagoans to learn more about these top two contenders’ positions and how they would respond to the many and complex challenges Chicago faces.

But let’s face it. There’s be a big upside to an Emanuel win tomorrow even for us.

What is it? We get the airwaves back! We don’t have to listen to any more commercials. They’ll be done. Done! No more radio commercials with Obama talking about setting up his administration, and how he needed Rahm by his side. I turn it off as soon as it starts. And while I don’t watch too much television, I’ve heard Emanuel is running lots and lots and lots of commercials. I wonder how quickly people grab their remotes to turn him off.

If Emanuel wins Tuesday, we in the suburbs ALL win.
