Downtown St. Charles Braces for Parking Lot Construction

Watch for temporary lane closures starting Thursday as Martam Construction builds the temporary 50-space parking lot between 1st Street and the Fox River. Construction is expected to take about three weeks.

The city of St. Charles announced Tuesday plans to build a temporary, 50-space parking lot between 1st Street and the Fox River. Construction is scheduled to start Thursday, Aug. 30.

According to a release, the city is advising travelers to expect temporary lane closures on 1st Street during the construction, which is expected to take about three weeks between Main and Illinois streets.

Martam Construction Inc. is the contractor.

The project will include an asphalt walkway along the east side of 1st Street to provide access from Main Street to the parking lot, the release stated. The city also said the owners of the property at the southeast corner of Main and 1st streets will remove the chain-link construction fence and replace it with a new decorative fence.

During the day, the release states, there may be some temporary lane closures and construction traffic on 1st Street, the release states. It also advises motorists and pedestrians using 1st Street during the construction to pay special attention to roadway conditions, construction crews and equipment.

“We ask that you slow down and heed directions from the construction crews,” the release states.

During construction, the release states, a handicapped parking space on the east side of 1st Street will not be available. It will be relocated to the new parking lot when it is completed.

I don't have a problem with the parking lot. Now after that goes in how about planting alot of trees and putting in benches so people can relax enjoy the riverfront. Leave it well enough alone and whomever owns that property can just suck up the loss and write it off. I'm sure Vi enjoys seeing that her tavern has become a fountain and not something to hand down to her daughters as much as the gentleman that owned the Manor. Sure do miss the Riverside Tavern too.

I took a walk around the lot area today as I was making my way around town taking some photos. I'll be honest -- I'm not sure what the best use of that site will be, but a temporary parking lot might look cleaner, if nothing else, for a while. But I think Lois Lane's idea about some greenery and benches would spruce up the area a bit as well.

Mr. Townsend - Could you please tell us what is the total estimated cost to build this temporary parking lot?
Brian Townsend August 30, 2012 at 07:52 PM
The estimated cost of the parking and the walkways is $16,000.

A surprisingly modest amount, given the size of the proposed lot. Do you know if the lot itself will be asphalt pavement or gravel?
