Council Quick Story: Heroes, Hockey Players, $1 Million Savings and a Liquor Code

It is a busy City Council meeting Monday night.

It was a quick Committee of the Whole and a long City Council meeting Monday night, but it included a full house of actions—moving tributes to real heroes, acknowledgement of excellence in fire fighting, excitement for a new hockey team, savings of more than $1 million to Geneva taxpayers and a liquor code change that went in like a lion and out like a lamb.

Here's the quick story:

Heroes Honored—The city honored the seven civilians involved in the river rescue on Aug. 5. but a youth's life was saved, in part because of the actions of a group of bicyclists who risked their own lives in the rescue.

Firefighters Honored—The Geneva Fire Department was one of just eight in Illinois to be granted accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation International. Read more  on Geneva Patch.

New Hockey Team in Town—A new hockey team begins its season with a 7:50 p.m. Friday puck drop at the Kane County Ice Arena. The Kane County Hitmen take to the ice in their new home for the first time on Friday. Formerly the Chicago Hitmen, the North American Hockey League club moves to Geneva after eight seasons in Rolling Meadows. 

Refinance of Bonds Grabs Big Savings for Geneva—A spokesman for Spears Financial said the figure was $1.2 million but City Administrator Mary McKittrick said the . The city landed a AA2 rating, which is superb. (The U.S. government has a AA1 rating.)

Liquor Code Changes Pass Unanimously—Without a comment, the changes to the passed 9-0 Tuesday night. Geneva's liquor ordinances and enforcement came under fire following the shutting down of outdoor sales during the . A year later, the ordinance changes are OK'd, in time for .
