City: Plows Hitting Prime Routes First; Side Streets at 3 AM

Public Works is targeting 3 a.m. to start plowing in residential neighborhoods.

The cit of Geneva's Public Works Department has been hitting primary snow emergency routes (main arterial roads) since 3:30 p.m. With snow continuing throughout the night, crews will be working around the clock to keep these routes clear.

Public Works is targeting 3 a.m. to start plowing in residential neighborhoods.

Salt is currently working given the temperatures but is expected to become less effective when the weather turns bitterly cold Sunday.

"While crews will be plowing, it is advisable to stay off the roads given the continued snow fall," the city said in a community alert.

I'm a plow driver and believe me when I say we are trying our very best. We are all running on fumes and are trying to open up the main streets. With the continuous snow fall and heavy winds it's near impossible to keep the mains safe. As a St Charles employee I can tell you we are trying hard to make it safe!

But keeping extra workers on staff and paying for more plows that will only be used 2 or 3 times a year is a waste. We (Geneva) subbed out brush and leaf pickup to a private company it it has never run more smoothly.

I've seen plows all over, of course they are trying to keep the main, and most important roads open and clear. Do we want a plow for every street so they can sit the other 350 other days a year it's not snowing? Relax, stay home and try to enjoy the snow, I'm sure they'll get to you soon enough.

I do not hold drivers accountable for a bad program. They have very difficult jobs and I am thankful for their service. But, plows didn't get to my street until 3pm yesterday. And, they didn't plow at all during the past week and a half during periods of heavy snow. Come on, you can't objectively defend this snow removal program as effective given what's been going on this winter.
