City Passes Budget 8-2, B&B 6-4

The City Council had its share of discussion and disagreement Monday night, but in the end, the budget stands as presented, and the bed and breakfast gets a 6-4 thumbs up.

The city of Geneva has a 2011-12 budget and a Geneva will have another bed and breakfast following action at Monday night's City Council meeting.

Fifth Ward Aldermen Ralph Dantino said he voted against the city budget in part because of "gamesmanship" he's seen play out against aldermen who have questioned city spending. Third Ward Alderman Ray Pawlak cast the other dissenting vote, but the overall motion passed 8-2.

No one from the audience chose to comment at the budget's public hearing.

A Peyton Street home will be turned into a bed and breakfast after a 6-4 vote in its favor by the City Council. Fifth Ward Alderman Craig Maladra changed his vote from the Committee of the Whole meeting the previous week, when the recommendation was deadlocked at 5-5. Mayor Kevin Burns had cast the deciding vote that pushed the ordinance change and special use request to the council.

More to come in stories tomorrow.
