City Council Quick Story: City OKs Geneva Jake's 5K Run

It is the world's fastest City Council meeting Monday night.

The Geneva City Council sat down, and five minutes later stood up Tuesday night after a meeting that had two agenda items, both on the omnibus agenda.

The omnibus items are those that area likely to pass unanimously, following the recommendations of the Committee of the Whole.

On Tuesday's agenda were these items:

  • Approve Request for Use of City Property for Aug. 6 5K Run.
  • Approve a Resolution Authorizing to Olsson Roofing Company Inc. for Wastewater Treatment Plant Blower Building Roof Replacement Project.

The first is a request by Dan Herrera to organize a 5K race as part of his Eagle Scout project. The run will take place from 7:30 to 8:30  p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, starting and finishing at the Kane County Government Center.

"Because the race is self-contained, no police services will be required," the city synopsis said. "Race participants will park on the upper level of the parking deck, register at Geneva Jake's and be directed down Third Street to the Kane County Government Center.

"The race is expected to draw 250 people. Geneva Jake's has supplied a certificate of insurance and race volunteers will help direct participants and provide the clean-up after the race. Staff has reviewed the race and has no other concerns with this event."

Herrera, who hails from Troop 37, is organizing the 5K race to raise funds to replace deteriorated U.S. flags in the downtown.

The city agreed to pay $26,500 for the Wastewater Treatment Facility roof replacement.

"The roof is in dire need of replacement due to age and leaks," according to the report by Superintendent of Water and Wastewater Bob Van Gyseghem.

Olsson was the low bidder for the project among the five bids received.
