Cathy Hurlbut Announces Candidacy for Kane County Circuit Clerk

Longtime Kane County Board member will seek position now held by Deb Seyller.

Elgin-area Kane County Board member and attorney Cathy Hurlbut announced Friday that she will be a Republican candidate for Kane County circuit clerk.

The position is currently held by Deborah Seyller, who previously announced that she will not be seeking re-election.

“I have seriously considered running for Kane County circuit clerk for the past several years," Hurlbut said in her announcement. "It has been my privilege in the past to work with my colleagues in government and the community to bring about positive communication and change.”

Hurlbut says she has "a unique perspective on the office of the circuit clerk, and look forward to bringing that same communication and change in my role with the judiciary and county.”

Hurlbut, the daughter of Eugene and Audrey Schick, of Elgin, was born in 1960 in Frankfurt, Germany, while her father was serving in the Army. She is a 1982 graduate of Valparaiso University, where she received a bachelor’s degree in business administration, with an emphasis in accounting. Hurlbut attended Valparaiso University School of Law, where she was a member of the law review and served as its executive editor of student writing in 1984-85. She received her law degree in May 1985.

Admitted to practice in the state of Illinois, she is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association and Kane County Bar Association. Hurlbut started her legal career with the law offices of Ariano, Anderson, Bazos, Hardy, Kramer and Castillo, P.C., in Elgin, in late 1985. In 1991, Hurlbut went into private practice and is currently a partner in the law firm of Hurlbut & Hurlbut, P.C., in Elgin.

In 1994, Hurlbut was first elected to the Kane County Board. She was re-elected in 1998, 2002, 2006 and 2010. During her tenure on the Kane County Board, she has served as the vice chairman and the chairman of numerous committees, including Finance, Administration, Development and Transportation. In addition, she sits on the Kane County Forest Preserve Executive Committee and Land Acquisition and Enterprise Committee.

A graduate of the first class of the Elgin Area Leadership Academy in 1992, Hurlbut is actively involved in the community. She served as chairman of the Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce and currently chairs the Chamber’s Transportation and Development Committee. She has been a board member of the Elgin Cosmopolitan Club, Ecker Center for Mental Health, Elgin United Way, and the Elgin Enrichment Series. In addition, she has been an active volunteer with Easter Seals and the Elgin YMCA, a Judge for the Elgin High School Trial Advocacy Competition and founder of the Watch City Cosmopolitan Club.

Hurlbut resides in Elgin with her husband, John, and their three children.
