Beth Bales: Yes, FREE Lawyer Help in Geneva! (And It's No Scam, These Are the Good Guys)

Since its inception in May, the "Lawyer in the Lobby" program at the Kane County Courthouse in Geneva has helped more than 100 people with their civil court cases. Lawyers are available every Friday morning to offer this assistance.

The legal system can be a bewildering maze to those unfamiliar with how the process works.

Many in the legal system know that and have started various program to help.

Since its launch in May, the new–and free!–”Lawyer in the Lobby” program has helped more than 100 people navigate the maze.

The program helps those representing themselves in Civil Court (not those facing criminal charges) who have cases pending before the courts.

“They help with procedural questions,” said Jan Wade, executive director of the Kane County Bar Association, which administers the program.

The free help is provided from 9 a.m. to noon every Friday at the Kane County Courthouse on South Third Street in Geneva. Volunteers include bar association attorneys with legal experience in the small claims and eviction courtrooms. Inquiries are limited to 15 minutes per person. Appointments are not necessary.

The bar association planned the program in conjunction with Prairie State Legal Services, Administer Justice, members of the judiciary of the 16th Judicial Circuit and courthouse personnel.

Have a small claims case pending? Need help? A lawyer in the lobby might just be the assistance you need.
