All-Day Kindergarten Coming to Geneva?
Geneva School Board President Mark Grosso says School District 304 is ready to take a close look at all-day kindergarten.
School Board President Mark Grosso said Monday that School District 304 is going to take a serious look at all-day kindergarten classes, starting with discussion at board meetings in July.
All-day kindergarten is, in most cases, a tuition-based option that's especially attractive for working parents who might otherwise have to pay for daycare.
It's also provides more in-depth learning experiences of the core curriculum during the additional time students are in class.
"We want to get it on the agenda to develop a preliminary action plan," Grosso said to the public comments portion of the board meeting. "We have had a number of letters from parents in the last month."
St. Charles School District 303 has all-day kindergarten classes. The cost there is $219.44 per month, per student. Students attend kindergarten from 8:40 a.m. to 3 p.m., the same as other students. They are bussed to school and can purchase lunch or bring their own.

Grosso said the discussion is only beginning, and all-day kindergarten would not be available for the 2013-14 school year.
"At the very earliest, we’re a year out from doing anything," he said.

Grosso said board members also will look at adding computer science classes to the curriculum.
In other action, the board took a preliminary look at the 2013-14 Education Fund Budget. Patch will follow up with a story on that topic.
