3 Candidates File as Write-Ins for Geneva Township Clerk

The race no one wanted to enter suddenly becomes a three-way sprint to the April 9 finish line.

When longtime Geneva Township Clerk Barb Olson decided not to seek re-election, who would have guessed the position would have so much interest and so many prospective candidates?

Until the past couple days, probably no one.

The clerk's position at first seemed to be a lock for Geoffrey M. Carriero, who submitted a petition with 162 signatures and was the only candidate to file for the post.

But Carriero's petition was challenged by Geneva Township Trustee Robert Kovacs, who said 19 of the signatures on the petition were invalid, either because the signers weren't registered voters in Geneva Township or because the names were printed in block lettering rather than cursive.

An election panel held up the challenge, and Carriero said he would seek the office as a write-in candidate.

But he's no longer alone, according to reports by the Daily Herald and Kane County Chronicle.

Two other candidates have filed as write-ins for the Geneva Township clerk's position. Debbie Draus, director of operations for Joe Stanton's Fagans Inc., has thrown her hat in the ring along with that of John Carlson.
