Woman With Dementia Reported Missing Near Geneva Returns Home Safely

Happy ending: A woman separated from her husband while shopping in our area is later found after a media alert is posted for the missing woman.

What had to be a scary situation for an elderly Aurora Township couple and their family had a happy ending Wednesday.

The Kane County Sheriff's Office issued a release Wednesday saying that Doris O'Connor was reported missing after shopping "near Geneva" with her husband, Charles. Both suffer from some level of dementia, according to a Facebook post by NBC Chicago and a report on the Chicago Tribune website.

The reports didn't say which Geneva-area store or shopping center the couple were visting, but the they somehow became separated, and Charles returned home without her.

The Kane County Sheriff's Office was called in and officials asked for the public's help in finding Doris. It must have worked, because Sheriff's Office Spokesperson Lt. Pat Gengler was able to send out a second, happier press release late Wednesday night.

"A few hours later, she was found safe at the Fox Valley Mall," Gengler said Thursday in an e-mail to Geneva Patch.

The Tribune reported that Doris O'Connor was located by the mall's security as they were closing for the night, and today she is reported "safe and sound."
