Western Avenue Railroad Crossing Will Close Traffic for 10 Days, School Buses Will Be Rerouted

The railroad crossing at Western Avenue will be closed to traffic and pedestrians beginning Wednesday for seven to 10 days to allow for repairs to the crossing.

The announcement was made by City Administrator Mary McKittrick at the tail end of the Monday-night meeting.

Earlier in the day, a District 304 e-mail blast said Western Avenue was expected to be closed for 14 days.

"According to Union Pacific, the work planned is a permanent repair to the crossing that will include the laying of new track panels, concrete and asphalt," the District 304 e-blast said. "It is possible that the city of Geneva will be completing some water main work in that location while the crossing is closed, according to Union Pacific."

"Affected buses will be rerouted during this time, which may cause a delay of up to a few minutes in both pickup and drop-off times," the School District e-mail said. "Large-scale delays to busing are not expected."

Last fall, at the Union Pacific Railroad Crossing from Friday, Oct. 15, to Wednesday, Oct. 20, for emergency rail repairs and grade crossing repairs.
