Weather Service Issues Flood Watch for Fox and Des Plaines Rivers

The National Weather Service-Chicago issues a flood advisory due to the runoff from the blizzard of 2011.

The National Weather Service-Chicago has issued a Flood Advisory, beginning at 9:03 a.m. Friday and continuing until 8:15 a.m Sunday.

The advisory includes the Fox River, Des Plaines River and Sugar Creek.

At 8:15 a.m. today (Friday), the stage was 12.3 feet. The action stage is 12.5 feet and the flood stage is 13 feet. The forecast is that the river will rise to near 12.6 feet by Friday evening.

The NWS's biggest concern is flooding at these points: on the Fox River at Montgomery and at Dayton, and on the Des Plaines River at Riverside.

The NWS-Chicago warns motorists traveling along river roads to be aware and exercise caution.

"If you encounter a flooded roadway, turn around and find an alternate route," the advisory says.

The Flood Advisory follows a due to the runoff of the 20 inches of snow that fell on Feb. 2.

"Moderate to locally heavy rain expected Sunday to Monday may compound the problem by increasing the runoff over already-saturated ground," the Weather Service reports.
