Weather Alert: Winter Storm Watch in Effect Thursday Evening

The National Weather Service and Geneva Police Department sent notices today of a Winter Storm Watch, starting Thursday evening.

The National Weather Service—Chicago has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the Geneva area, starting Thursday evening.

Timing

Rain will change to wet snow from west to east late Thursday afternoon into Thursday evening through late Thursday night—and it's likely to be heavy at times. Strong winds will develop later Thursday afternoon and continue through Thursday night.

Snow Accumulation

As of Wednesday afternoon, the indictions are that totals of 2 to 6 inches are likely, with higher amounts expected to the north and west. More is possible if heavy snow bands and thundersnow develop.

Wind

Gusts of 50 to 60 mph are expected.

Impacts

The combination of snow and wind will result in greatly reduced visibility and possibly near-blizzard conditions. Falling temperatures will cuase roads to become snow-covered and make travel treacherous. It could also reult in minor damage and sporadic power outages.

Expect some air-travel delays.

The Geneva Police Department sent notice in an e-blast Wednesday.
