Virginia Hit Hard By Quake, But No Shake, Rattle or Roll Felt in Geneva

Media reports say the Virginia earthquake was felt from D.C. to Chicago, but no Patch readers felt the afternoon rattle.

Media reports say this afternoon's earthquake in Virginia was felt from D.C. to Chicago, but no one in Geneva has yet to report experiencing a shake, rattle or roll.

The U.S. Geological Survey website says the quake hit at 1:51 p.m., centered somewhere around Louisa, VA, and had a magnitude of 5.8. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The Chicago Tribune has the magnitude at 5.9 and says "many Illinois residents reported feeling shaking around the same time." That includes folks in Champaign, Chicago and as close as Elgin.

CBS Chicago says the quake was reportedly felt in Chicago.

Geneva Patch readers on Facebook say they didn't feel a thing.

Pam Youngberg DiDonato said, "Not a bit. I wonder what area of IL reported feeling it?"

"Heard someone in Elgin say they felt it," Mary Niederkorn Hilgart said.
