UPDATE: Geneva Man Charged in Fatal Quarry Accident in Naperville

Mihirtej Boddupalli, 21, of Lisle, and Sajaad Safiullah Syed, 21, of Naperville, were killed in the crash.

A 21-year-old Geneva man faces reckless homicide and DUI charges following a crash into a Naperville quarry that left two dead. 

Michael T. Szot, 21, of Geneva, is accused of driving drunk at about 2 a.m. Saturday when he crashed his 2007 Chevy Impala into a park district quarry, according to the Naperville Police Department press release. 

A preliminary investigation shows Szot was traveling west on Aurora Avenue before leaving the roadway at Eagle Street, crashing into several trees and landing in the quarry on the northwest corner of intersection, according to the news release. 

Two passengers in his vehicle, Mihirtej Boddupalli, 21, of Lisle, and Sajaad Safiullah Syed, 21, of Naperville, were unable to escape the vehicle. They were later found by police and taken to Edward Hospital where they were pronounced dead. 

Szot was able to escape the vehicle and swim to safety. He was taken to Edward Hospital where he was treated and released. 

He has been charged with four counts of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol causing the death of another and two counts of reckless homicide. 

The Naperville Fire Department, Naperville Police Department, Lisle-Woodridge Fire Department, Downers Grove Fire Department and Aurora Fire Department dive rescue teams responded and assisted in the recovery.
