Unusual Thefts: 2 Pieces of Petrified Brazilian Fern Wood Stolen

Plus, police help woman get her cellphone back after breakup with boyfriend.

Petrified Brazilian fern wood. That's right — $700 worth, in fact — was stolen from a yard in Geneva. And a woman buys a cell phone for her boyfriend, then he won't give it back when they break up.

These are among the unusual thefts reports filed between Aug. 12 and Aug. 21 in Geneva and Batavia.

Petrified Brazilian Fern Wood Stolen

Someone took two pieces of petrified Brazilian fern wood from a residence in the 300 block of Oakwood Drive sometime between 4 p.m. Aug. 15 and 7:30 a.m. Aug. 16, reports said. The two pieces of petrified wood are described as 5 inches by 6 inches and 12 inches by 16 inches and have a combined value of $750. The theft took place on the same day the homeowner had sod planted in his yard by Chicago Suburban Turf Management, but when the workers left at 4 p.m., the decorative wood was still in the middle of the driveway.

I-Pass Responder Behind License Plate?

Someone removed a license plate and I-Pass responder that was attached to it sometime between 11 p.m. Aug. 12 and 6 p.m. Aug. 18, according to reports. The value of the property was estimated at $10.

Ex-Boyfriend to Return Cellphone

According to a report filed at 2:16 p.m. Aug. 17, a female complainant said she had obtained a cell phone for her ex-boyfriend. When their relationship ended, he took the phone and refused to return it. The man told police he would return the phone.

License Plates Taken by Debtor?

The victim told police that license plates were taken off the back of his car by an acquaintance who owed him money. Police contact the offender, who admitted to taking the plates and told police he would return them.

Unfinished Theft Report

A theft under $500 was reported at 5:40 p.m. Aug. 15 in the 200 block of Mills Street. No other information was provided.

$15 in Gas Stolen

Someone pumped $15 worth of gas without paying for it at the Wilson Marathon, 206 E. Wilson St., according to a report filed at 7:33 a.m. Aug. 13.
