Two Workers at Care Center Accused of Elderly Abuse

18-year-old employees also accused of videotaping their abuse, police said.

St. Charles police arrested two employees of a senior care facility on suspicion they physically abused a resident and recorded their actions.

Officers responded to the Rosewood Care Center, 850 Dunham Road, for a report of an aggravated battery and unlawful videotaping of an elderly resident by two employees, which reportedly occurred on Tuesday, March 11, 2014. 

An administrator of Rosewood Care Center reported that two employees, Jacqueline Santos, 18, and Chemyra Barnett, 18, were suspected of physically abusing an elderly resident at the center and videotaping the incident.  The victim was reportedly uninjured during this incident.

Santos and Barnett, both of South Elgin, were arrested and each faces the following charges:

  • 1 count each for Aggravated Battery of a Person Over 60 - Class 3 Felony
  • 1 count each for Unlawful Videotaping Class 4 Felony                            

Bail was set at $15,000 for each. The accused are to have no contact with the victim or the care center and neither can possess a cell phone while the case is pending.

So they're accused, right? Maybe we wait until the conviction before piling on?

It is sad. That's why people kringe at nursing homes or don't want to put their love ones in there. Most of the workers are low paid CNA's. If you want to be in that profession you need to like your job even if you don't get paid enough. I'm glad they checked up on this. My grandma is in the same one in Rockford. I worry about this all the time. I hope they do more checks on this. Places like this should check and do more background checks on their employees.
