Fire in Basement of Landmark Campana Building; No One Hurt and Fire Is Out

Geneva and Batavia fire departments respond to a call regarding a fire in the basement of the Campana Building at Route 31 and Fabyan Parkway. All is well.

Firefighters from Batavia and Geneva responded to the report of a fire at the landmark Campana Building, 901 N. Batavia Ave., Batavia, at around 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, and by 12 p.m., the fire was out and all was well.

Batavia Fire Chief Rudy Deicke said smoke was coming from one of the transformers in the basement of the building.

Firefighters used hoses to extinguish the fire, and water could be seen in the parking lot in the aftermath.

No one was hurt, and the fire did not spread to any other floors.

The St. Peter Barn Sale had used—and may still be using—the facility for collection and storage of Barn Sale items. Various businesses rent space, and classes are held at the building from time to time.

It appeared that people inside were asked to evacuate for a short time late Tuesday morning.

The Campana Building was designed by Frank Chase as a cosmetics manufacturing business in 1937. Built with elements of Art Moderne style of architecture, it was designated in 2003 as the first local landmark in the city of Batavia, according to landmarks.org.
