The officers summoned the Kane County Bomb Unit to the scene. The unit determined that the grenade had previously been rendered inoperable, the release said.

"The grenade was not in working condition as it was drilled out (i.e. no powder), so no one was ever in danger," said North Aurora Lt. Scott Buziecki in an e-mail.

The North Aurora boy who brought the grenade was arrested and transported to the North Aurora Police Department for processing. He is charged with Disorderly Conduct and will be referred to Juvenile Court Services, police said.

All persons arrested are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
