State Bank Fire Ruled Accidental
The fire that took hold of the State Bank of Geneva in the wee hours of Wednesday morning most likely caused by a damaged electrical cord.
A damaged electrical cord is the likely cause of a Wednesday morning fire that caused almost a half-million dollars of damage to the State Bank of Geneva, 22 S. Fourth St., Deputy Fire Chief Mark Einwich said in a Friday press release.
"The Geneva Fire Department has concluded its investigation into the origin and cause of the fire at the State Bank of Geneva and has determined the
fire was accidental in nature," Einwich said.
The fire originated in a first-floor office in the northwest corner of the building.

Geneva Fire Department fire investigators, with assistance of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives and Geneva Police Department investigators, determined the fire was most likely caused by a damaged electrical extension cord.
Damage has been estimated to be $400,000 to the building and $85,000 to the contents.

Companies were able to confine the fire to the first floor of the bank, according to an earlier Fire Department press release.
The Geneva Fire Department was assisted by mutual aid companies from the St. Charles, Batavia, Elburn, North Aurora, West Chicago, FermiLab, Winfield, Carol Stream, and Sugar Grove Fire Departments.
Lew Deal, president of the State Bank of Geneva, said Wednesday morning that the bank is staying in business, its ATMs are working and its drive-through is up and running. He anticipated establishing a mobile banking unit in the bank's parking lot.
The State Bank website's homepage statement promises a quick recovery.
"As you have probably seen or heard in the news, the bank had a fire on Wednesday. We want to thank the Geneva Police and Fire Department and emergency responders from neighboring communities who acted quickly and professionally to put the fire out. We will be working day to day to restore all bank services. We want to thank our customers and friends of the bank for supporting us while we work to get things back to normal."
