St. Charles Police Arrest Man in Bold, West-Side Burglary

The residents of a home on Millburn Court have an alert neighbor to thank after he boldly followed an uninvited visitor into their home and surprised the man, who fled but was arrested minutes later by St. Charles police.

Carl D. Newsome, 39, of the 1600 block of Indiana Street, was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon at his home. He was charged with residential burglary, a Class 1 felony.

Police said they are investigating to determine if there is any connection between Newsome and other burglaries in the neighborhood.

Police were called about 2:50 p.m. Wednesday to the home on Millburn Court on a report of a burglary in process. A resident told officers he saw an older-model dark blue Honda four-door vehicle pull into his neighbor’s driveway. A man then walked up to the home’s front door and rang the doorbell.

The resident told police he became suspicious because he knew his neighbors were not at home, so he walked over to the building.

As he walked up the driveway, the resident saw no one was in the Honda, and he then walked around to the back door, saw it was open, as was the garage door leading into the residence. The witness told police he entered the house, announced his presence, and asked if anyone was inside. The man then ran right past the witness and out the back door.

He told police he followed the man and saw him get back into his car and leave, so he called 911 and provided dispatchers detailed descriptions of both the man and the vehicle.

Police said the responding officers knew of a man on parole for past burglaries who matched the physical description of the burglar. Officers responded both to the scene of the burglary and to Newsome’s home on the 1600 block of Indiana Street, where they found Newsome pulling into the parking lot of his residence. Both Newsome and his vehicle matched the descriptions provided by the witness, police said.

Meantime, officers at the Millburn Court home found that the residence had been broken into, and police evidence technicians came to find and process evidence.

Police took the witness to Indiana Street where a show-up — in which the witness is allowed to physically look at the suspect — was conducted. Police said the witness positively identified Newsome and the blue Honda. Newsome was taken into custody without incident and transported to the St. Charles Police Department. The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized the burglary charge, and Newsome was booked, processed, and transported to the Kane County Jail to await a court appearance.
